If you are searching for halal collagen tablets, there is one thing to check before anything else, and it is not the milligram number on the front. It is what the tablet or capsule is actually made of. A great collagen inside a gelatine shell is still a gelatine shell.
The shell is the problem, not the collagen
Collagen itself is an animal protein, so the source matters, and marine collagen sidesteps the slaughter question because fish does not require it.1 But most tablets sold as capsules use a gelatine shell, and gelatine is usually porcine or from non certified bovine hide.2 Two separate questions, two separate answers needed.
What to check on the back of the pack
- The capsule material. Look for HPMC, hypromellose, cellulose or pullulan. Those are plant based. If it just says capsule shell, assume gelatine until the brand tells you otherwise.
- The collagen species. Marine, bovine or chicken. Marine is permissible without slaughter certification. Bovine needs it.
- Whether vitamin C is in there. Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin.3 Plenty of tablets leave it out.
- The real dose per serving. A 1,000mg claim often means per three or four tablets. Check the serving size, not the headline.
- Binders and coatings. Magnesium stearate and glycerine can both be animal derived. Vegetable sourced versions are usually stated.
Tablets, powder or gummies
| Format | Usual halal risk | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Tablets and capsules | Gelatine shell, animal derived binders | People who want a dose with no flavour at all |
| Powder | Usually low, the risk sits in flavourings | Big doses, if you will genuinely mix it daily |
| Gummies | Gelatine set rather than pectin set | Actually finishing the bottle |
None of these is better in a vacuum. The best format is the one you will still be taking in week six, which is usually the one that does not need a shaker. We compared two of them properly in halal collagen gummies vs powder.
A word on the milligram race
Large numbers sell well. Absorption is what decides whether any of it reaches you, and that depends on the peptides being hydrolysed to a low molecular weight rather than on the figure printed on the tub.4 A sensible dose of well made peptides with vitamin C alongside beats a bigger number without it.
No capsule shell to worry about. Pectin set, marine collagen, with vitamin C included.
Shop Halal Collagen GummiesFrequently asked questions
Are collagen capsules halal? Only if the shell is plant based. Look for HPMC, hypromellose, cellulose or pullulan, and check the collagen species separately.
Is marine collagen better than bovine for tablets? For permissibility it is simpler, because fish does not require slaughter certification. For absorption the evidence is reasonable for hydrolysed marine peptides.
How many tablets a day is normal? It varies by product, which is the point. Read the serving size before you compare two labels on price.
